A few weeks ago I posted a Reel on Instagram.

It went viral overnight.

73,000 views. 856 saves. 836 shares. 1,041 comments.

Sounds like a dream right?

Except 75% of those views came from India.

Not exactly the US women I was trying to reach. 😅

Here's what happened:

Early on a few followers from India found my content. Instagram's algorithm saw their engagement. Decided my content was for them. Sent it to more people like them.

They engaged. Algorithm sent it to even more. By the time it hit 73K views — I had completely lost control of who was seeing it.

And the comments?

Hundreds of chartered accountants from India asking if I needed bookkeeping work outsourced.

Not exactly my target audience. 😂

But here's the thing that struck me most:

While all of this was happening —

My bookkeeping clients kept paying me.

$2,500. This month. Like every month before it.

No viral moment required. No algorithm needed. No Instagram required.

Because here's what the "make money online" space doesn't tell you:

The people selling you the dream of going viral and building a following — they're making money because YOU'RE trying to build a following.

A huge percentage of those big engagement numbers are from audiences in developing economies who will never buy anything.

I fell into that trap and it cost me weeks of energy and focus.

But it also gave me the clearest possible proof of something I already knew:
